The 16-member international arbitration panel included experts from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (UN SDSN) and the Higher Education Sustainability Initiative (HESI).

According to the international jury, one of the greatest strengths of MOME’s programmes is that the individual initiatives do not operate in isolation, but build on each other and strengthen each other to form a coherent system.

The reviewers highlighted in particular the innovative and holistic approach of the projects, which also create new opportunities in the operation of MOME and can serve as an inspiring model for other higher education institutions, which can be further developed.

The history of the university’s sustainability program, MOME Zero, started in 2022 with the aim of making the university the first in Hungary to achieve carbon neutrality at an institutional level by 2030. Since then, the initiative has continued to grow beyond its initial objective: In addition to reducing and compensating emissions, preserving urban biodiversity, adapting to climate change and consciously shaping the university’s environment are now part of the program.

According to the announcement, the aim is to make sustainability an integral and decisive part of everyday operation and thinking through activities in which both students and staff are actively involved. The programme is based on five practical pillars: forest planting, beekeeping, composting, community garden and waste bank. They develop students’ ecological awareness and capacity to act in line with the European Union’s GreenComp Sustainability Competence Framework.

In recent years, the MOME Zero team has planted a total of 116,000 saplings on 25 hectares, including replacements, involving 690 students and staff. The campus’s 450-square-metre community garden housed almost 50 climate-tolerant species and 10 experimental plots, with almost 300,000 bees living in beekeeping. The 6 cubic meter experimental composter serves to keep the green waste generated in the park in place, and by using the waste bank, the amount of new raw materials used for student projects is reduced by almost 100 kilograms per year.

In the information, it was written that the real environmental challenges of the university will become learning and planning situations, in which students can also contribute to a more sustainable operation of the campus. This approach is reinforced by the Ecology to Design (E2D) program, which focuses on the relationship between nature, ecosystems, and design. The students examine the challenges related to sustainable operation through real-life situations and look for creative, designer answers to them – read the factsheet.

The MOME Zero and Ecology to Design (E2D) programmes of the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design) won the first prize of the Green Gown Award, the most prestigious international recognition of sustainability initiatives of higher education institutions.

[107,95

post-10855","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-design","category-sajtokozlemeny
["GET
