MOME's new campus has been handed over

The new campus of Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME) represents the future, Mayor István Tarlós said at Friday’s inauguration ceremony of the building complex, which was constructed with a gross amount of HUF 21.4 billion.

The knowledge workshop, named after László Moholy-Nagy since 2005, has been the centre of Hungarian design for 135 years, and thanks to the investment it has become the most modern art education institution in Central Europe, the Mayor stressed.
István Tarlós recalled that a new organisational structure was established at the university in 2010, covering different areas of expertise, and that in the same year Budapest also received new leadership, and since then a ‘permanent lifetime’ of work has been carried out there.
The Chain Bridge and its surroundings, Blaha Lujza Square, Széna Square will soon be renewed, the planning of the Aquincum Bridge will begin, the modernisation of the transport infrastructure and the vehicle replacement of the BKV will continue, he listed the planned developments.
István Tarlós highlighted that an important part of the project was the renewal of the campus park: A 15,000 square meter public park with 16,000 new plants will soon be opened to the public, along with public parking spaces and bicycle parking spaces on Zugligeti Road.
Gergely Gulyás, Minister heading the Prime Minister's Office and Member of Parliament for District XII pointed out that the creative industry is one of the fastest growing sectors, which also contributes significantly to the growth of the national economy, and the new campus of MOME is also a significant investment in the field of art education at European level.

Even in the narrower environment of the university, new developments are being prepared week by week, and several major projects have been implemented or are underway across Budapest, such as the numerous public institutions of District XII and Normafa, thus renewing the Castle District and the City Park, ‘although, for the sake of non-Budapests, the National Museum is not part of the Liget project because it is in another district’, the Minister responded to the speech of opposition mayor-designate Gergely Karácsony at the handover.
According to Rector József Fülöp, MOME's new campus will not only function as an educational institution, but will also strengthen its research activities to remain at the forefront of innovation.
As he recalled, the architects of the campus were Péter Reimholz, Zsófia Csomay, Tamás Németh, as well as Katalin Csillag and Zsolt Gunther, directors of the 3h Architects' Office.
Gábor Kopek, ministerial commissioner and former rector of MOME added: Almost twenty years of work have been behind the project, resulting in 25,000 square meters of built space and 15,000 square meters of park. “What was built is also world-class by international standards. It feels good to say that this is possible in Hungary today", said Gábor Kopek.
Balázs Fürjes, Minister of State for the development of Budapest and the metropolitan agglomeration, who manages the project, stressed: MOME's new campus was completed on time and within budget, and both the designer and the contractor were selected through an open tender.
The two new educational buildings built on campus include community spaces, workshops, lecturers, seminar rooms, digital and traditional libraries. There is a high-tech photo, film and audio studio, a digital imaging workshop, laboratories working with the latest technology, said Balázs Fürjes, adding: Those who study at MOMÉ receive world-class basic and doctoral, theoretical and practical training.
At the end of the opening, István Tarlós handed over the symbolic key of the campus to Rector József Fülöp and the representatives of the students.
