MOME Diploma Exhibition opens on Saturday

From Saturday the MOME Diploma Exhibition can be seen; students of the twelve master's programmes of the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME) will present their thesis works reflecting on the challenges of the 21st century on the Zugligeti út campus.
Csaba Kovács, architect and acting rector of the university emphasized at the press visit of the exhibition on Thursday: creative young people, who are particularly receptive to art, have been coming to the institution to learn and create for decades. Over the past year and a half, students have proven that they can mobilise this kind of creative life for society and to answer current questions and solve problems, he added.
He stressed: Today's students tend to think complexly and critically and are capable of self-criticism. They stand up for their opinions, form a community, and can effectively convey their thoughts in a new way, in a new formulation. Participatory democracy, autonomy and dialogue are important to them.
They would like to shape the world and its environment primarily through their work and artistic activity, but also, if necessary, through direct social activity. This commitment is reflected in their thesis work, he said.
He highlighted: In their work, too, a number of issues relevant to the world and society appear, be it sustainability, social sensitivity, social mobility, issues related to the climate crisis and many other topical topics.
He added: In addition to community values, individual experience is also present in the exhibition, but there is also a diversity of problem-solving and student approaches. They have twelve master’s programmes, six of which are international, i.e. students from different countries work together with Hungarian students, creating an internationally embedded environment, he highlighted.
He said: the exhibition can be seen at different locations on the Zugligeti Road campus. He added: they have a new square, Villa 5 Zugligeti út, which for the first time ‘inhabited’ with the exhibition, together with the students, figuring out how the former residential building can be used for the university.
Presenting the exhibition, Péter Vető, head of the Master's programme, said: in the building purchased by the university, in the former house of the actor Erzsi Máthé, the thesis works of the subject making specialization can be seen.
He talked about the fact that the thesis works are usually multidisciplinary, since the students of the master's programmes choose a topic from a broader horizon and integrate experiences, research contents, the themes of the exhibition materials are more complex. He highlighted: For those who are interested in design and the intersection of different arts, it is worth visiting the exhibition.
Through the masterpieces of MOME, those interested can get an idea of what the new generation of creators is interested in: the exhibited works address social, environmental and technological challenges from a personal perspective. Prototypes, mock-ups and visualizations were exhibited at the exhibition presenting the thesis works.
This year's thesis focuses on works that move on the border between the digital and analog worlds, on mental well-being and self-awareness, on sustainability and object culture, and on the examination of identity, body and community norms in the intersection of design, fashion and media culture, architecture, photography, animation and design theory.
Some of the works start directly from familiar situations in everyday life: how we order food, what we do with our lost items, what traces we leave online, or what objects and spaces help us take care of them.
The exhibition is accompanied by a citylight exhibition organized in cooperation between JCDecaux and MOME, which presents a selection of the works of former special prize winners of the university.
